Just a quick little post today. I have people ask and wonder about how we live in a 1000 square foot house with 5 kids. Well its actually pretty comfortable right now. The 4 boys have the master bedroom, Katara shares a room with my sewing/craft stuff and Paul and I have the other bedroom.
Which brings me to how awesome of a set up we have for the boys. 2 bunk beds, custom closet units and custom toy shelving..
Take a look!
As you enter the room, Bunk be on the left houses Drezden up top, Ryker below. Toy storage is there in the middle and Zander/Sylers bunk on the right.
Custom closet for the older 3. Drezden, Zander then Sylers clothes. All of it, we don't switch out for seasons or anything, it is just all out all the time. Makes it easier and less storing elsewhere. They each have the one bar for shirts, containers for socks/underwear/ swim gear/ long johns/ hats & belts. Then a shelf for Shorts/sweatshirts, one shelf for pants and a shelf for pajamas. It works awesome. Then up in the top of the closet they each have their baby boxes and any other important items that are personal to them.
Where are Ryker's clothes? Next to the books. Hey it works! Same shelving set up as the others, just couldn't fit 4 in the closet!
The beds/toy storage looking from the closet, left Drezden/Rykers bed, right Zander/Syler.
So thankful at how well this works!!
Now I don't have pictures of the other bedrooms, but Katara's room has a crib, changing table/cloth diaper storage unit and a armoire for her clothes. My sewing table, which can be folded up when not in use (but lets be realistic here, its always up). The closet contains the sheets and bedding for her crib, plus the few toys she has and then a bunch of my craft supplies.
Paul and I have the smallest room, but it works great, we use a water bed frame for our mattress so we each have 6 dresser drawers under our bed, then we share the top bar of the closet for our clothes. We both are pretty minimalists when it comes to clothing so this works well. The bottom half of the closet is available for storage, but currently has nothing stored there. Then we each have a book case on our side of the bed, housing books mostly, but also the computer printer and paper.
Our main living space consists of a living room, dining and kitchen. The living room has a small couch, 1 book shelf, a television and the computer. I would say the dining is more like a breakfast nook and also doubles as the homeschool area. It has a table, a whiteboard and a cabinet where I store all the homeschool supplies. The kitchen is small but functional, has just the right amount of space for our kitchen items and forces me to keep the counters clear or there is no room to make meals.
Our laundry room is in the one car garage, which we use mostly as a shop. It has shelves on one wall for storage of my photography gear and clothing for this kids to grow into. Which currently is mostly Katara's as the boys are back to back in clothing sizes ranging from size 5 down to 2T. So the one box of boy clothes holds mostly things we have been given in size 6 and up. The other wall has Pauls tools/work area, a cabinet we use as a pantry for all the canned food, and an up right freezer. Then the last corner houses the washer/dryer and water heater.
I am pretty pleased with how well this little house works for us. I have to admit, I like small houses.
There you go. That is how we do it. Simplicity and great use of space.
You two have done an AMAZING job!! It never ceases to amaze me at how well you make use of the space!! AND, SIMPLICITY IS BEST!! :)
